Portraits from India and East Africa
When I take a portrait, no matter who, I try to capture the true essence of the person. If the energy of person is transmitted through the portrait, then I have succeeded. This is a selection of the portraits I captured while I was living in India, Kenya and Tanzania. I lived India and Tanzania both for a year at a time, and Kenya for a few months; I truly believe that the best way to travel is to live somewhere for awhile. Having familiarity of a place, neighbors, getting to know the local vendors; all of this contributes to a well-rounded sense of a place, and potentially, acceptance therein. Getting to know people before taking their portrait is the key to a more in-depth image. Gaining people’s trust is a privilege earned, and once you have trust, you can have true consent (to capture images).
